Has anyone seen this movie? I'm always tempted to pick up the dvd and a region-free dvd player? but that's a lot of cash for one film. Anyone checked it out? I'm a pretty big EVA fan, just don't know if i'm big enough to spend thhhaaaat much cash.

  2. Hey Mark, I haven't seen it yet but there are fansubs on Tokyotosho if you have the time and bandwidth... I'd say just download or wait for now and save your money! Especially since this is just part 1 of 4, the story is basically the same as the original, and it will almost certainly be released here eventually.

Btw, you should also be able to use VLC to freely play any region DVDs on your computer.

  5. And in case you miss this, Funimation acquired the rights to this movie and I think it will be released on DVD sometime this year.

  7. The translations for the other Eva domestic releases (by ADV, I think?) were pretty questionable too. I watched it with the subtitles and have no idea what the dubs were like. Funimation in particular does seem to be the worst of the bunch though... I remember watching some dubbed Dragon Ball on TV when it first came out and it was so awful!

  8. Made it to the Stanford screening. Since, I've only seen the first half or so of the original series, a lot of it served as a recap. Other than some upgraded visuals I guess the whole thing felt more pieced together from parts of the original. Then again, that alone serves as a testiment to how well done the TV series was. A guy I met there mentioned that Shinji came off as less of a wuss/sissy in this version. I'll have to agree. Apparently there was a trailer of 2.0 after credits which I reluctantly missed. Oh well.

Buy the way, to the Stanford/tvtropes dude that I met there (You know who you are), if you see this post, gimme a ping!

  9. Having just seen the movie at the same showing I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with this remake. The CG looked pretty cool and was the most noticeable difference for me, but I was already happy with the old TV version visuals which IMO have stood the test of time pretty well.

Also sure Shinji seemed like less of a wuss, but in the TV series the way he was able to gain confidence as the series went on was such a big part of the story. My favorite character is Misato and she didn't have enough screen time. In general, character development really suffered in this version...

Overall I'd recommend to just watch the TV series again if given a choice. Judging from the first movie, this compressed/cut storyline doesn't seem to be nearly as good. The fourth movie storyline is supposed to diverge though with a new NEW ending! Since I'm one of those people that thought the original ending could REALLY have been better, I'm actually curious to see that completely redone.
