Favorite manga and more

  1. We have a favorite anime thread so I thought we needed one for manga! What are your favorites? Any favorite authors? What are you reading now?

If I had to pick a favorite manga it would probably be Gunnm (a.k.a. Battle Angel) by Yukito Kishiro. I'm anxiously awaiting the next volume of Last Order! I'm also reading Zetman by Masakazu Katsura (I used to fan translate the series for a scanlation group) which I like better than any of his previous series'. Other older finished manga series favorites of mine are Busou Renkin and The Violinist of Hameln (manga is WAY different from the anime... HILARIOUS!). As for shoujo manga favorites the only series I've read recently is Gakuen Alice although I used to read a lot of manga by Yuu Watase (who I hear is switching to shonen manga now).

sorry, I only deal with raw manga. :D

but yea...my collection is pitifully small since...well...lack of a reliable source of income... lol
anyways...I have the entire series of Dragon Ball (I got them back in junior high and on, worked my ass off collecting cans for recycling....my home town in japan had a program for recycling that gave you book gift certificates for cans).
Then I have all the art books (I remember going to the book store after getting off the school bus to pre-order them....I bet the bookstore ppl were like...wtf...this gaijin is speaking japanese and ordering japanese books)

then later, I got into Berserk, I've got up to like vol 20 or 21....I need to pick back up but the Berserk books are so much more expensive in the states (I started collecting while still in japan).

And I have a few Slayers volumes and Trigun volumes (the thing with those two, there's so many sub-series's that it's hard to keep track)

I also wanted to get into the Detective Conan and One Piece (I use to read One Piece in WSJ [weekly shonen jump] along with Kochi-kame)

    O the nostalgic memories!

  3. haha, the original gunnm series was my favorite manga as well! i first read it in middle school and uh, it really messed me up with it's ultra-violence and crossing over all sorts of weird man-machine boundaries. the story-arc with zapan was pretty powerful stuff...and i'm forever haunted by that scene of desty nova opening his head...
i thought the ending of the original series was the perfect closure to the epic storyline, so i'm sort of afraid that retconning the ending with last order is going to ruin the series for me (see: star wars, frank miller's dark knight strikes again, macross 7, etc.)
i read some of the berserk manga to get some closure to the abruptly-ended tv series...it's pretty graphic :-) it also comes out at such a slow pace that i'd rather just wait for the series to end so i don't have to deal with the suspense at the end of every volume, but i guess if i do that i'd have to wait a loong time...

  4. Import Japanese manga is way too expensive here! I used to wait until I had a whole bunch of books on my list and then make a big order from Amazon Japan to save on shipping. Hmm, if anyone's interested maybe we could organize a group import manga order on BayAnime, since we're all pretty localized...

Sweet, someone else likes Gunnm here! The story was great, just the right balance of everything really. I also really appreciate that it wasn't ever unnecessarily sexist and dirty like most other sci-fi seinen manga (e.g. Zetman, Gantz). Gunnm had the strange side effect of making me hyper-sensitive to anything involving flan. Anyway I am liking Last Order just as much! It has the same feel and doesn't ruin anything IMO, so I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who liked the first series.

I use to order things from Japan using Fujisan.com (they are in berkeley) but they are able to special order a horde of different things (especially if you have the ISBN or the video product codes). Even preordering DVD's.
