  1. My advice: don't waste your money! It's not horrible, but not worth more than a rental IMO. The first segment (Michel Gondry's) was pretty good, though not great. The second was rubbish. The third started off promising, but was overall kind of "enh."

I need a good movie to watch.

  2. That's too bad. I was kinda looking forward to seeing TOKYO! Movies dealing with shorts always kind of end up uneven for me. I don't remember much about it but I think the first "JAM Films," a collection of Japanese shorts from 2002 was the best experience I had with the genre.

I don't think there's really anything good playing in the theaters lately, but I saw a great Japanese film lately called "Always: sunset on 3rd Street." Highly recommended. The movie also has a sequel that's just as good, and has probably one of the best openings I've ever seen.

  3. Ha! Godzilla lives! Actually the second short in "Tokyo!" opened with a somewhat funny sequence set to Godzilla music too. Unfortunately after that it was awful...

I guess I went into the movie thinking it would be something like "Paris, je t'aime" which I liked. But Paris had way more shorts so there was a lot of variety, and if you didn't particularly like one it was over quickly and you could move on to the next. Since they were also shorter I think it just seemed to get right to it and never dragged.

The last really great Japanese movie I saw was "Cha no aji" ("The Taste of Tea"). If you haven't seen it yet you must! The grandpa is awesome!

And thanks for your recommendations! Will check them out... Hopefully they're on Netflix.

  4. time for mike's monthly dissenting movie opinion post! (just kidding)

just saw this last week, my thoughts -
gondry's - it started out pretty pedestrian, but it made an outlandish turn in the expected gondry style. i'd say it's still quite inspired, although it feels a bit like the director trying to get back at an ex-girlfriend who jilted him.
merde - if they stopped this segment right after the first scene, it would have been awesome. but unfortunately it got muddled in a farcical plot that attempted (and failed) to make some point about the perceived xenophobia of japan.
hikikormori - this was actually my favorite segment. i had never heard of the hikikomori (sp?) fringe culture before, and i especially enjoyed the uplifting message at the end.

not the best collection of shorts i've seen, but still worth a watch in my opinion if you like oddball stories.
