Summertime films are the kind I like, I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike....

We're a month deep in the schedule of summer releases, what has everyone seen so far? What else are you looking forward to? Anything you recommend?

I've only seen Star Trek and Terminator 4 as of yet. I enjoyed both, but it seems everyone I talk to likes only the former. Star Trek has a lot of glamour. It's a really visual movie, and they took an interesting approach to rebooting the franchise. On the other hand, the more I step away from the IMAX screen the more doesn't sit well with me. The plot really feels shoddily crafted, like out of popsicle sticks and craft glue, and barely manages to shoehorn the characters into the roles we need them to be in. Still, strong acting and awe-inspiring visuals cover it up well and make up for it at least partially, as it is a fun ride which is all you really need a movie to be. And, hey, it's still an odd-numbered Trek film so the next one should be outstanding, right?

No one I know that has seen Terminator has been happy with it. But it's got robots and explosions and guns and robots, what more do you need from a Terminator film, and the 4th one at that? The plot obviously is nothing deep, and John Connor isn't really the focus of the story. It's just that fun ride I mentioned above; don't go in expecting Shakespeare. I just hope Transformers 2 has robots that compare!

That said, I'm looking forward to Transformers 2, The Hangover, and Year One (even though I am sick to death of Michael Cera, seriously, get a new schtick already!). And I still want to see Night at the Museum 2 even though it has bad reviews and no one will see it with me.

  2. my thoughts in summary:

star trek - agreed. plot points tied together a bit loosely (especially clumsy was how they shoehorned scotty into the story), but somehow the whole of the movie is still incredibly inspiring and enjoyable. loved it.

t4 - i'm actually passing on this one (until dvd). i read an article about how christian bale rewrote the script to push his own character into the spotlight, making the final plot somewhat incoherent and pointless. and considering the original leaked script was widely panned, i figured nothing good could come of this.

michael cera - i don't think it's a schtick -- he is simply the luckiest socially awkward teen who ever lived. i'm liking him less with every new michael cera movie where he plays the role of michael cera, but probably because i'm jealous.

i love watching movies at the theater, and so far, i have loved two of the three summer blockbusters i have watched this year.

Star Trek was amazingly awesome, and so far, it is in the running for my favorite movie of the year! now, i would not have considered myself a trekkie.. the only experience i had with the series before this year's movie was a few episodes of the old old tv series when a marathon came on years ago. i enjoyed those of course, but yea, this new movie was so good, i had my coworker recommend to me the best of the old movies to get some background story. i got Star Trek 2 via netflix over a week ago, and i look forward to part 3.

being a huge fan of the first two movies in the franchise, Terminator: Salvation was extremely fun for me. the movie itself was pretty good, and i loved how it referenced a lot of the previous ones. though to be fair, it is tough for me not to love a movie with robots destroying things. :)

wolverine was just straight up terrible. since my brother paid for my ticket, i am happy to say i personally didn't contribute to its box office draw. haha im a jerk.

i am definitely looking forward to Year One, and am excited for both Half Blood Prince and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. oh, and i will watch G.I. Joe, but am not expecting all that great a movie. will just go to enjoy snake eyes vs storm shadow.

  4. Star Trek was the best for sure. New Spock is not as cool as old Spock, and new Kirk not as amusing as old Kirk... McCoy was pretty spot on, Chekov was funny... so overall not bad.

I dunno, I was really looking forward to Terminator Salvation but ended up disappointed. Full of some really dubious "Uh... what?!" moments and the major twist was already revealed in the trailer. They tried to make it too touchy-feely or something... MORE action and stuff blowing up would have been better!

I just saw The Hangover the other day and recommend it to anyone looking for a good comedy! Hilarious. It's not as raunchy as expected, instead relying on the character interations during the ridiculous scenario and really solid non-sequitur comedy. And it keeps you drawn in with the mystery of "what exactly did they do last night!?" It's almost Chekov's gun given the form of an entire movie. A nice break from all the action movies coming out.

  6. Hello,

I saw Star Trek, and it wasn't as great as I thought it would be, in my modest opinion. I felt that it was like an hour long episode, and it was mostly a film for fanservice. Even though I liked the 60's version, I really only watched it for Spock. However, at the end it was pretty good.

Also, I would have to disagree with the opinion that Terminator was a disappointment. It was EXCELLENT. People don't really know the theological aspect of the film, and social and the value of humanity's morality. I mean, if the world was like this, a barren wasteland with no laws, it would be a really scary place. As a veteran of dystopian films, I was really happy William Gibson gave his credit to the film. McGinty also read "The Road" which was about a father and his child.
As for "blowing stuff up" I am sure that's a subjective point of view, that is from a young person's "eye-candy" virtue, however, from a modest point of view, the films about the Terminator was a love story, and horror story, it wasn't really an action film. The ultimate point of Terminator was that it was about The CONNORS, and their legacy to make a future of living, and GIVING to others, and not a have a dead degenerate future.

  7. Oh and by the way, Terminator Salvation on DVD will have an unrated version, and possibly showing the experimentation upon humans in the Skynet lab. Also, an *AHEM* aesthetic scene with Moon Bloodgood... (drools...) ^^;

Huh? I completely disagree! Think sci-fi, dark dystopian future. Love story it isn't... this is a series about mankind's FIGHT for their survival against the machines. I mean dude, our governator stars in these movies! This all spells action, and lots of it!

  9. From what James Cameron said, the first was a horror story, and a love story. Terminator 3 was an action film. The Terminator was just a machine. They should call it Skynet the movie. If Cameron didnt shack up with linda hamilton, and left his wife Gayle Ann Hurd who was part of studio canal, we would of had a great franchise. Arnold is too flabby now to play the Terminator role. Also, it's just the beginning.

    Thanks for your insight Ann.

    Star Trek was ok.
As a movie, it was great.
As a Star Trek movie, it wasn't that great.

There were many erratas in the movie (something that erks the Trekkie in me), including minor things such as Klingons don't have Warbirds!

We still have Transformers 2 and GI Joe: Rise of Cobra.

As far as Terminator Salvation goes, yea...it seemed a little fragmented probably due to several script rewrites.

It's still not as "strange" of an ending as Ong Bak 2.

  13. Star Trek was disappointing mostly because it was hyped so much that it SHOULD have been fantastic. The biggest problems were:

    1. New Spock is not bad-ass like old Spock.
    2. New Kirk is not as amusing as old Kirk.
    3. The bad guys are really weak. Remember KHAAAAAAN? Kirk does.
    4. Winona Ryder is pretending to be Spock's mom, but let's face it... she is Winona Ryder. At least she dies.

However, old Spock was in this movie so that kind of saved it a little. And overall as a "new movie" it was pretty good. And it was obvious that they tried to get it right. So it gets the thumbs up.

GI Joe does not look like GI Joe. It looks like people dressed in black bodysuits pretending they're in Spiderman... but with no Spiderman. Or pretending they're in X-Men minus all the X-Men. What's going on?!

And come on, admit it! We all hated the humans in the Transformers cartoons. The humans were all annoying, and we just wanted to see awesome robot fighting action. It's not like they even had some hot girl in Transformers like they did in TMNT (and the "hot" was questionable too...); but in Transformers it was just some old white guy and his kid and they were so WEAK.

    guys, im bored tonight!

i loved the new star trek, tho i have to say that i was never a big fan of the previous movies. i'd only seen a few of the old tv series long, long ago. :)

regarding g.i. joe, i am actually thankful they aren't doing a full recreation of the old cartoon's character designs.. i mean, i'd rather not see shipwreck with a parrot on his shoulder, or quick kick running around dodging gunfire while topless and barefoot. hahaha

tho i am wary about the super duper high tech battlesuits they wear that allow them to cartwheel and flip up and down the streets while dodging vehicles and missiles. seems a tad over-the-top.

Winona stole the show! Or should I say, shoplifted?

Sorry, Norm MacDonald made fun of that the other night on Conan and I figured it was fair game again however many years later.

  20. Hi Ann,

I agree upon Star Trek. I only liked Spock. Kirk was cool, but the best Kirk I saw was definitely Wrath of Khan. The other funny one was Star Trek 4 when they were in san francisco with the whales. The funniest part was scotty saying to a macintosh "computer??"

Kudos to GiJoe - it does not look like GiJoe. It's more like "powersuit joe." Gi Joe needs to stay a cartoon. Even the new CG GI Joe I did not like, [sigma 6]. I felt uninspired.

Transformers I (please don't hit me) I loved it. It was more contemporary and they are more alien-like. I know some parts are cheezy [IE: Are you on drugs? That's his Bliiing.. and well.. I'll stop complaining.]

Overall, Transformers I was really happy and have much gratitude that they chose Peter Cullen as Optimus. Bay was going to pick Liam Neeson instead, and Michael J Fox as Bumblebee. If it was released in the 80s it would definitely be such a cheesy looking film. Megan Fox still is whoa, but not as hot looking as Moon Bloodgood! ^^

Overall, I have much gratitude for the films released, because it still gives us a sense of wonder and imagination, and it was better than not having it released.

    TBC,
    Bobby
