What is winter without a kotatsu? Well actually I have yet to use one, but they sure look comfy and inviting. First I'll stuff myself silly with sukiyaki and then I wouldn't mind crawling under it and hibernating for a while.

yea...I remember my winter afternoons....especially on holidays or weekends...my mom and I would just fall asleep in one until evening...all snug and warm

I have great memories of Shanghai where my friends and I would all get together, play cards, eat, talk, drink... and fall asleep under the kotatsu. If we ever slept over we usually all ended up around/under it.
Mmm... sukiyaki and shabu shabu and yakiniku... I'm getting hungry!

That's hilarious! That will be me some (cold) day!
The heater in my apartment in Shanghai never worked well so I would pretty much try to stay under my electric blanket all the time... of course a kotatsu would have been way better.

I love kotatsu's. When I was at my uncle's house in Japan, it was so cozy and warm. I could stay there all day. Of course they had the sunken floor as well, so when I get mine here, it will just be on my lovely carpet lol.
lol and that video, that was crazy.

I've done kotatsu's both on carpet, sunken (mainly meant for places with older folks who can't get up and down too easily), and on tatami.

Does anyone know where to get a kotatsu in San Fran?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Hey panda123, I'm pretty sure I've seen them at some shop(s) in Japantown... try checking Genji. Mikado used to but they're gone now. Not sure what kind you're looking for but I think they're somewhat expensive there as they might only carry a small selection of nicer ones. I've also seen used ones up for sale on the Nijiya bulletin board, but usually only during the busy moving seasons like the end of the school year/beginning of summer.
Anyone else know of any other shop that sells kotatsu?

Hey Sailor Moon... Mikado isn't in SF anymore; they moved to the Tanforan mall in San Bruno. It's actually a really big store now (I took pictures and keep meaning to post a review on the site!) but they just sell anime goods, toys, accessories, clothes, and a few artbooks and CDs, but no electronics. The owner is a nice Japanese guy and he did tell me that he could do special orders of things... so maybe you can still special order something like a kotatsu? Where did you buy your kotatsu, Sailor Moon?

I know some Japanese stores in SoCal will have them (such as Marukai and what-not) but yea...u probably don't want to drive down to like Torrance just to get one :D
