I basically marathoned Gurren Lagann this weekend. If you like mechas, and you like sheer ludicrosity, and you like awesomeness, you will probably like this series. I'm a little upset I didn't really hear anything about it until 2 years late (although, this is what let me marathon it instead of waiting week to week)! It's a nice deviation from the reluctant mecha pilot archetype popularized by Shinji that I've been seeing too much of, and just when you think the show can't top itself, it manages to really surprise.

It's by the same team within Gainax that did FLCL, as well as others that I've yet to watch (e.g. Diebuster which is next in my queue).

  2. Gurren Lagann reminds me of Scryed, but I don't find it as amusing. Scryed was pretty over the top and the main character cracked me up.

I recently (finally) finished watching Slayers Evolution-R, but it was really kind of a disappointment. Oh well.

  3. Ironically, out of all the anime that I've own and watched... Theres alot i havent "completely" watched yet.

Though with all the recent Talk of Hayao Miyazaki, I just finally watched Howl's Moving Castle. I enjoyed it quite a bit and my friends actually have small gatherings to watch random anime or a few episodes of series they havent "completed" watching yet.

for myself I'm semi old school and have always been a fan of: Ranma [should be obvious], Inuyasha [I only have up to season 5 on dvds], Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Your Under Arrest, Chobits, and Ai Yori Aoish, just to name a few...

if anyone wants to borrow from part of my collection or start up a mini gathering anime viewing session let me know. :)

Just finished watching Aishiteruze Baby. Really cute anime that actually seems to have character development for once.

  5. ah, I recently saw that too! I loved Aishiteruze Baby! ^_^. Yuzuyu was, like, one of the first kids I've seen that actually acts like a kid, and not a mini-adult =P

I finished the Aishiteruze Baby! manga awhile back and was really happy with it. I'm glad to hear the anime was good as well.
I just finished Demon Lord Dante, and Aura Battler Dunbine before that. Both anime felt old school, both wandered from time to time, and both had endings that left me wanting. They both had good points though so I would say they are worth a rental.

  7. Kyouran Kazoku Nikki, Ristorante Paradiso each completed this week. KKN definitely had a lot of fun memories for me. However Ristorante Paradiso is a subject closer to my heart so i'd have to say I enjoyed it more. I forget what's on my list for this weekend...

I last finished the 2nd season of Clannad. If you liked Aishiteruze Baby!, you may like a character here too. Season 1 was kinda slow and annoying to get through, but I think getting to season 2 made it worth it.

I've seen some of the other titles you guys have mentioned, but sorry to say I don't agree with some opinions here. I've been watching anime for a long time now, so that's probably made me kinda picky about what I'd say was a good series or movie.

I agree about Black Lagoon. I wish there will be more, but I doubt it now since its been a while since season 2 ended. I didn't like Gurren Lagaan, Slayers, Last Exile, or Blood+ that much. Lucky Star and Aishiteruze Baby were ok, but I wish the artwork was better. 12 Kingdoms... I'd say was ok too.

Some friends say I'm too hard to please... maybe.

Gryph, Nothing wrong with being picky. That just means the anime you do like is meaninful to you. What titles have you really liked?

Hmmm... not too many that I really liked without any reservations. The only ones I can think of now are Cowboy Bebop (no big surprise there) and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

There are others that I like, but only parts of them, not the whole thing like the 2 mentioned above.

And although its not anime, I think the Avatar the Last Air Bender series was pretty good too.

... I guess I should add Kanon to my list too. Its kind of a chick flick, but what the hey, I like it.

Just finished Gunbuster and Diebuster aka Gunbuster 2. Things I learned from Wikipedia: the series were released 18 years apart, Gunbuster is considered a spiritual predecessor to Evangelion, and Diebuster can be classified as a "comedy". That last one is definitely not the case.

Anyway, I did not care one bit for Gunbuster, and getting through its 6 episodes was a chore, but I was told to watch it before Diebuster which was the one recommended. It is interesting to see how they tie in together, and they have some shared thematic elements, but I think the sequel handled character development and the way the story unfolded a lot more cleanly. Gunbuster's dated animation surprisingly didn't bother me much. End of the day, Diebuster also didn't impress, but held my interest throughout. At 6 episodes long, that'd be worth something if I didn't also have to watch its predecessor.

I rewatched K-on and for some reason enjoyed it way more now than I did the first time watching it. Cute show. Crap now I want something with a story line though.

  15. Kanon is most definitely not a chick flick. It's harem anime based on a dating sim that is definitely for dudes.

Sorry, when I said chick-flick, I just meant the art work is girly. I already heard the history behind the series.

Oh, and there's not much fighting/action. Its mostly about relationships, drama, feelings, etc.
